EVENT: March Against the Cuts - 5th March

Assemble 12 noon, All Saints Park, Oxford Rd, rally 1.30pm, Manchester Town Hall
Organised by: Manchester Coalition against Cuts
Supporters include North West TUC, UNITE City Council Branch, Manchester Trades Council

The Coalition Government tells us that there is no alternative to the savage cuts they are imposing. They say that the cuts are necessary to pay for the deficit. We say there is an alternative.

The cuts announced by local councils will wreck the lives of millions. There has already been a wave of protest against closures of libraries, swimming pools and sure start centres in the communities of Greater Manchester. Supported housing, Sure Start centres, libraries, swimming pools and youth centres are all facing the axe as part of £109 million worth of cuts over the next financial year – rising to £170 million in 2012-13.

The attacks on public sector jobs and services, the tripling of fees for university education, the slashing of funds from university teaching, are not inevitable. These attacks are a political choice about what kind of society we want. This government of millionaires is creating a society in which the rich get richer whilst the majority face job cuts, declining wages, pension poverty and a reduced welfare state. We want to build a society which invests in education and jobs, in which everyone has access to well-funded public services and which provides supports for the most vulnerable in our society. Join us in fighting the cuts!

Join together on Saturday 5 March to say a massive no to cuts: there is an alternative.
