IBMT Manchester Memorial Day

Around 50 people gathered downstairs in Manchester Central Library today to remember those from Greater Manchester who bravely fought against fascism in the Spanish Civil War.

The carved wood memorial to the Brigaders is currently situated there, having been temporarily moved from it's place in Manchester Town Hall which is currently under renovation.

The International Brigades Memorial Trust organised a wonderful event, with poetry, readings and singing from Bolton Clarion Choir.

Nick Druce, grandson of Brigader Benny Goldman gave a moving account of his visit to Jarama, retracing his grandfather's steps during the war in Spain, Dave Puller performed three of his poems and Paul Ward read out the names of the Brigaders from Manchester who lost their lives. A minute's silence was observed and a wreath placed beneath the memorial.

Among those attending were members of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) and Communist Party (Italy) along with members of the North West District Communist Party of Britain.
