Diggers draw the crowds

An estimated 2,000 people attended the second annual Wigan Diggers Festival in Lancashire on Saturday.

The event was set up to commemorate The Diggers, a group established in 1649 after the English civil war to live co-operatively on socialist lines.

Leader Gerard Winstanley was from Wigan.

Organiser Stephen Hall said: "We staged it in a pub last year and 500 people turned up - this year we decided to be a bit more ambitious."

This year's event involved more than 20 musical performances with musician and Morning Star columnist Attila the Stockbroker top of the bill.

The open-air celebration in glorious sunshine also included a re-enactment of the Diggers' activities.

Two local breweries also provided special ales for the occasion - Diggers 1649 and Gerard Winstanley ale.
