Welcome this historic year of anniversaries with
THE MORNING STAR ROBERT BURNS SUPPER!

This year, 2020, is a very special year for both the Communist Party and the Morning Star newspaper.

The party is marking its 100th anniversary while the Morning Star, which incorporates the former Daily Worker, is marking its 90th anniversary.

The Communist Party was founded in 1920 while the first edition of the Daily Worker was published by the party in January 1930. The paper was later was renamed the Morning Star in the 1960s and was run by a co-operative rather than the Communist Party.

Today, the Morning Star is the only English language daily socialist newspaper in the world. Its history is fascinating and it has overcome numerous bans, boycotts and obstacles over the decades. For good reason it is nicknamed 'the daily miracle'.

Throughout this year, numerous activities are planned across the UK to celebrate the history and contribution of the Communist Party, the Morning Star and the Daily Worker to progressive politics.

On January 25, the Greater Manchester Morning Star Readers & Supporters Group is holding a traditional Robert Burns supper at Stockport Labour Club. The night will include a meal of haggis, neeps, tatties and whisky, along with Robert Burns poetry, music, political speeches and a prize raffle. Why don't you join us for the night?

Last year's Burns Night event attracted 80 people and this year's promises to be another good night.

Robert Burns, born on January 25, 1759, was at the forefront of literary, political and social thought of his day. Coming from a modest rural background, he later became celebrated as the 'Ploughman poet' of Scotland. He had a colourful and unconventional life, and was known as a lover of wine, women, nature and song. However, he also opposed bigotry, snobbery and religious intolerance, and championed equality, democracy and international friendship.

For many good reasons, Robert Burns' life, ideals, poems and songs are enjoyed and celebrated across the world.
