Greater Manchester Living Wage Campaign

The meeting has be organised to explore the idea, and discuss the possible launch of a Greater Manchester Living Wage Campaign. Speaker will be Graham Witham, UK Poverty Adviser, Save the Children.

Recently a series of articles in the MEN highlighted the scandal that 42% of Manchester's children did not get enough food.

While people donating food parcels and talk of soup kitchens is well intended, it is not the solution to the problem of people trying to live on low pay . We live in one of the richest countries in the world and it should be unacceptable to everyone that people and especially children should have to live in such poverty.

The Coalition Government's austerity measures are beginning to bite and to hurt ordinary working people hard! Wage freezes, wage cuts, cuts in working hours, benefit cuts such as those to housing and council tax benefit and tax credits, are all taking place at the same time as we are seeing increases in social housing rents, utility bill and food prices. The introduction of the universal credit and bedroom tax next year promise to make things even worse.

This open meeting is an opportunity for ordinary people local groups, trades unionists and others, to come together and create the basis for working collectively together to try and achieve a Living wage for all the workers across Greater Manchester. Come along yourself and/or ask your local community group or Trade Union branch to send some one along and get involved.
