EVENT: Celebrate Cable Street Victory

The Communist Party will be hosting a march and rally in London to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the 'battle of Cable Street' on Sunday, October 2. Trade union, local community and anti-racist, anti-fascist groups will be invited to join an organising committee to plan the event, in liaison with a local progamme of activities already being arranged.

'This 75th anniversary will be a great occasion for the labour movement, the left and all who want to live in a civilised, tolerant, multicultural society to celebrate a famous victory over fascism and racism - and to declare our determination to defeat those same reactionary forces today', Communist Party chair Bill Greenshields declared, announcing the inititiative on Wednesday evening (April 6).

On October 4, 1936, Sir Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists attempted to march through East London, but were prevented from doing so by huge crowds of local residents, many of them Jewish or Irish, with communists and socialists leading the resistance to police and fascist violence.
