STATEMENT: NUT balloting for strike action

This Association of Bolton NUT believes that all workers in the public services deserve to live with dignity and independence in old age and are entitled to an adequate pension reflecting their commitment to working with young, the vulnerable and the deprived.

This Association therefore welcomes and applauds the decision of the NUT National Executive Committee to ballot for strike action in defence of teachers' pension rights and in particular for a final salary scheme at age 60, indexed in line with the Retail Price Index.

This Association further applauds the NUT NEC in taking a lead in inviting other trade union leaderships to join in a co-ordinated programme of strike action to defend pension rights.

We call upon other trade unions to join us in this campaign, and commit ourselves to a resolute defense of our pension rights for our ourselves and future workers.

The motion has been sent to all North West regions of UNISON, ATL, NASUWT, and GMB, and the national offices. Schools are being urged to follow the same route.

Please circulate.
